MetaMask has launched a new social login feature that allows users to create and restore wallets using their Google or Apple accounts. The update eliminates the traditional requirement of managing a 12-word seed phrase, which has long been a barrier for crypto newcomers.
The feature is powered by Web3Auth and is currently available on the browser extension version 13.0.0 and above. Mobile support is expected to roll out soon. Users can authenticate with familiar login credentials and a unique password to access their assets across devices.
Despite the simplified process, MetaMask maintains that the wallet remains fully self-custodial. No single entity, including MetaMask, can access all components needed to retrieve the Secret Recovery Phrase. The social credentials, combined with the user's password, unlock the SRP only on local devices.
The company emphasized that users can maintain both authentication methods, keeping the traditional recovery phrase alongside Social Login functionality for added security.
